Marie asked Rabi Thapa:

Dear Mister Thapa, could you tell me about the social position of women in Thamel? What strikes me in Nepal is that there seems to be a lot of attention for gender equality and expressing gender fluidity. There are newly introduced laws to protect (trans)(wo)men, which is amazing. Yet in practice, and based on the conversations I had with women, they are still marginalized. Could you please explain? Thank you so much.

Rabi Thapa Hi, Sorry for taking so long to reply. As far as I can tell, the social position of women in Thamel is not much better than it is elsewhere in Nepal, and in many cases much worse. While some may run businesses and earn an income in the many different kinds of establishments in the tourist quarter, many of the jobs available are precarious and exploitative, particularly those in massage parlours that are fronts for the sex industry. You're absolutely right - despite the laws in place, the reality is rather different for poor women who are compelled to earn a living in Thamel.
