A few years ago I discovered Wildwood Dancing in the library. After only a chapter or two I was completely entranced. Cybele's Secret proved just as enchanting. I loved the mystery and myth, the magic and wonder, the characters and culture. I’ve recently rediscovered these books and want to explore more of your work. Which of your books would you recommend I read first if I greatly enjoyed Wildwood Dancing?
Juliet Marillier
Hi Brenan. I'd recommend either Daughter of the Forest (my first novel, and the first book in the Sevenwaters series, set in early medieval Ireland) or Heart's Blood (a stand-alone novel, combining history, fantasy and ghost story, and loosely based on Beauty and the Beast.) I hope you enjoy whichever you choose. They're both books for adult readers.
The other option is to start on the Shadowfell series (the first book is called Shadowfell.) They're similar in length to the Wildwood books, and are set in a fictional, and very magical, version of ancient Scotland. The series is a story of tyranny and rebellion and has a big cast of uncanny characters. Shadowfell is a young adult book, but I'm told it is an excellent read for adults, too.
all the best, Juliet M

Hi Mrs. Marillier! :) I loved your Sevenwaters and Blackthorn & Grim series so much that you have inspired me to write my own historical fantasy. I just want your opinion, as a reader, does combining too many references oversaturate my plot/make it unoriginal, even if I make connect them well? It combines the black death, astral projection, Celtic references, Arthurian lore, and references the song "Scarborough Fair".

First off you're a wonderful writer and your imagination is so impressive. So many different characters. So many different conversations. You're astounding! Thank you for being a writer. I'd love to know if it comes easily to you, but that's not my question. I'm curious what fairytale or idea inspired "the dogs" in Flame of Sevenwaters?
