Goodreads asked Christopher Hall:

How do you get inspired to write?

Christopher Hall One day I felt the urge to write at length about the topic of being utterly reliant on a system we do not control, a political economy owned and managed by an extreme minority who themselves barely control despite all their efforts to do so. My concern is how fragile our arrangement is and how likely it is to become upset by natural and human events.

I was struck by the thought that we are all living in a fairytale, and that reality was harsh and hidden from view: no we do not have agency in our lives, we are not sovereign unto ourselves, we are akin to farm animals who enrich the farmer who owns and manages the farm, we are utterly reliant upon a system of work-shop-vote we do not control and most of the infotainment we experience masks all of this. The situation is so bleak it requires extensive examples and explanations coming from every facet of our lives, which is what the book consists of.
