India M. Clamp asked David Putnam:

Hi David, is it true that in the study of profiling murderers we find a certain demographic profile? Grateful for your service to our county in protect its citizens.

David Putnam Hey, great hearing from you. I've had homicide classes when I became a supervisor but not the more in depth kind. For years I chased murderers once the case was made on them, more of a fugitive recovery type job. I did read their file and try to get into their heads, their backgrounds, the places they frequented, the people they hung around with, that type of think.
The majority of murders are gang/drug related. Those are difficult to solve because of the sociology involved. The folks come from lives and neighborhoods where to help the police is taboo and law enforcement can not work without the people. So many of those cases go unsolved. The most popular way to solve them is based in a barter system where one crook will get arrested and is looking at huge time subtracted from his life's bank in the form of a prison sentence and he'll trade information.
The next category is heat of passion when their is an argument that escalates.
Then their are the serial killers which there are varied reason why they kill multiple victims the most common of which is mental illness.
The last category which people/readers seem to be the most interested in is the laying in wait, or the cold calculating murderer. This one is the worst society has to offer and carries the heavies penalty because of it. Someone who methodically plans and lays in wait for the victim, or someone who hires a hit man to do the deed which happened in my family. My aunt and cousin hired a hit man and brutally murdered my favorite uncle.
I hope this little rant answers your question. If not feel free to reword it and ask again.
Thanks for you time
d.
