Goodreads asked Smita Rajgopal Poliak:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Smita Rajgopal Poliak As a person of color myself, it has always made me flinch when I heard people say things like "I don't see color". It got me thinking as to why and how people mostly say it not even with malice but just as a reflex to assert that they are beyond racial bias. I noticed my own personal reaction was always to feel that color should be seen, acknowledged, and accepted if not loved. I reflected on how from childhood itself not many children pick black as a color that's a favorite. The book “I See Black” was created to allow a young child's imagination to break beyond stereotypes on color from a very simple standpoint and offer relatable positive associations with the color black.
