Read, read, read. Explore genres you haven't tried before. When you love (or hate) something you read, ask yourself why? What is that you admire, making you love a book -- or what is it that bothers you, making you dislike a book? As an example, I was thrilled when I learned Utopia Avenue was coming out, but I never made it past about halfway, because too much of it just didn't ring true to the time it was supposedly set in. A book I love is Rabbit Foot Bill -- the language allows me to see, smell, almost taste every scene. Maybe I'll have to write a review of it. Immersive.
