Goodreads asked Rachel Zolotov:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Rachel Zolotov My novel, The Girl with the Silver Star was inspired by a single conversation I had with my mother.
I grew up devouring book after book, many of them memoir and historical fiction WWII books. I was intrigued and fascinated by them, and I felt that by reading their stories, I could help keep them alive. Somehow, I never thought about asking my parents about my own family history until one night, a few years ago. My mom told me all she knew, which wasn't much, as my notes fit on one page.
I dove head first into archives, and after weeks of research, I found copies of original documents. Soon, I knew more about my family history than my mother. I knew then, that I had a story that needed to be shared with the world and the rest is history!
