Goodreads asked Alan Loewen:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Alan Loewen (Answered On February 7th, 2017)

Currently, I am working on a series of short stories that together comprise what is called a "braided novel."

The Shrine War has already been published in Fred Patten's anthology, Dogs of War. I am currently writing a short story that runs concurrently with The Shrine Wars entitled, The Inugami. It will be all wrapped hope in a much lighter humor piece with the working title, Hoso's First Day.

The series was inspired by my love of the Far East especially China and Japan. Everything fascinates me: the architecture, their history, their religion and their mythology. The three stories all deal with with my favorite yōkai (loosely defined as fabulous creatures) that are the kitsune (fox spirits) and the Inugami (dog gods). Needless to say, I have taken great liberties with their mythology.
