P.J. Sullivan
P.J. Sullivan asked Tammy Pemper:

Are Americans involved in Timor?

Tammy Pemper Hi PJ.

Thanks for your question.

Yes, the US has had a long history with Timor-Leste. Examples include that the US played an important role during the 1999 referendum, which led to the recognition of the independence of Timor-Leste. Earl Chandler, a police peacekeeper was shot and survived, during that period.

The US also contributed to INTERFET, a multinational armed tasked force that helped restore order and end the scorching of Timor-Leste after the announcement of the results of that 1999 referendum.

Americans are still active in Timor-Leste today (2021). There are many organisations there at the moment, including Peace Corps.

I hope that answers your question. Please let me know if you would like more information.

Thanks again!
