Ami asked Gene Luen Yang:

American Born Chinese was the first graphic novel nominated for a National Book Award. When you were writing it, did you know it would be one of those books that paved the way for widespread comics acceptance?

Gene Luen Yang Ha ha. No. American Born Chinese started off as a photocopied mini-comic, stapled by hand. In the first run, I made maybe 50 copies or so. I definitely wasn't thinking about paving the way for anything-- I just wanted to get my comic done.
