Goodreads asked Em Seaver:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Em Seaver Ahh I have the perfect one for this. One time I was sitting in a coffee shop with earbuds in but not listening to something, as you do, and two people sat down at the table beside mine. The guy was from Germany with a strong accent and the girl from TN. The first thing they started talking about, I kid you not, was their criminal record. Both had a solid handful of minor charges. For the next hour I listened to them use what-- honestly what very much sounded like code words as they discussed setting up a... I believe it was an iced coffee business? It sounded so sketch and I was incredibly invested in this idea as I was listening to it. So invested, in fact, that I wrote an entire chapter of my book without realizing it because I was trying to make sure they didn't know I was listening. At some point, I glanced over and made eye contact with the man, and less than five minutes later both of them got up and left the coffee shop. I have no idea what I was listening to for an hour but it was so interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if I'd been listening to a criminal investigation being plotted. Still curious what it was, to be honest.
