Goodreads asked Deborah J. Chavez:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Deborah J. Chavez My mom's family could keep secrets, but they were amateurs compared to dad's. Dad's family were expert level. They were talented at dissembling and distracting when asked about things they meant to keep hidden. I was quite young when we moved to the state where dad's youngest brother lived with his wife, their ten-year-old son and their newborn son. Not two years later, my Aunt and youngest cousin were dead, my Uncle found his way of life was alcohol-bound, and my other cousin was nowhere to be found. My uncle eventually found his way, remarried, and had a good career. For years I tried to learn what happened. My parents seemed to not share my interest in locating my long-lost cousin. When my dad passed, I learned many things I had not known about him. Some of his secrets were finally out. I expected to learn more about my uncle after he passed. It was not to be. He opted for no services. Those secrets remain secrets.
