Goodreads asked Clare Hawken:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Clare Hawken I was having one of those mornings: one daughter had lost a school shoe, another couldn't find her homework, and both were blaming me for tidying it up; my husband had asked me five times what time he needed to pick them up after gymnastics rather than consulting the timetable on the fridge; and no one was happy with my dinner plans for that night. Added to a kitchen that looked like a bomb site and a day full of chores, I suddenly had a mad urge to book myself on a flight to Paris and not tell them where I was! Which made me wonder: what would it take for me to actually do that and what would my husband do if he had to carry the mental load of the family? Would it all fall apart or would they function without me? Once I worked through the idea, I knew that Jane would be too dutiful to leave Roger in the lurch, unless she discovered something about his past that made her see red. That's when the plot and the characters came together for me.
