Tyler Miller My grandfather on my dad’s side never spoke about his family. Not to anyone. Not even his wife. He showed up in town, met my grandmother, married and never told anyone where he came from. He died young in a factory fire, and the mystery of his past died with him. Years later, some of my grandmother’s relatives hired a private investigator to track down Grandpa Ted’s history, but they never found a thing. For all we know, Ted Miller wasn’t even his real name.

Maybe he was a bank robber from back East. Or maybe he had another family in a different state. Or maybe he was just a normal bloke who wanted to make a new life for himself without any baggage weighing him down.

We’ll never know.
