Gary Sites asked Dan Joseph:

I just wanted to thank you for writing "Last Ride of the Iron Horse". You did a wonderful job on a subject close to my baseball heart. It was a pure treat to read. Since this thing won't let me send my note without a question mark, I'll ask, Why did you choose Gehrig as your subject?

Dan Joseph You're welcome, Gary. Great to hear from a satisfied reader! I chose Gehrig because it fascinated me how he was able to keep playing (for a while) even as ALS robbed him of his awesome skills. A lesser Gehrig was still a good major league player, at least in 1938. He was even able to get some hits in April 1939 when ALS was really taking its toll.

BTW, if you haven't seen it, Sunbury Press just published my latest book, "Baseball's Greatest What If," on Pistol Pete Reiser, ill-fated Brooklyn Dodgers star of the 1940s. You might enjoy that one too.

Have a great new year,
Dan
