Goodreads asked Ayun Halliday:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ayun Halliday While producing Necromancers of the Public Domain, a monthly book-based, one-night-only, Off-Off-Broadway variety show series, I started thinking about how much it meant to me when other artists showed up to support my work, and conversely, how there are certain practitioners who don't abide by that social contract.

I started thinking that there was a need for some sort of hybrid etiquette book / survival guide to being a small potato in the arts. I interviewed several dozen others who persist in putting their creative work out there, even when the rewards seem few, and the mainstream's interest hovers around nil. These interviews form the backbone of CREATIVE, NOT FAMOUS: THE SMALL POTATO MANIFESTO.
