Kani asked Aaron Foley:

Remy is the only character POV that's written in first person (a feature that I personally adore). I was wondering if you knew it'd be like that from the very start? You mentioned that you initially started with an all-female cast so did you have plans of having 2 POVs in third person + 1 in first person with them too?

Aaron Foley No, I didn't expect to do any first-person at all when I started. I didn't feel comfortable inhabiting a woman's voice. Once I switched to male characters, I realized I had an opportunity to capture what a Detroiter -- particularly a gay Detroiter -- sounded like. Terry McMillan tweets periodically about eavesdropping on conversations to capture people's speech patterns and rhythms, so for Remy I listened in closely to some of the ticks my own gay friends were using ("blase-blase" is a fun one), ear-hustled on conversations at bars, watched Instagram videos, and mixed in some Detroit slang along the way.
