Lisa Mcbroom asked Ellen Marie Wiseman:

I am reading The Lost Girls of Willowbrook and I am liking it. I was a teen when Geraldo Rivers exposed the horrible conditions at Willowbrook.. My question is at one point you refer to someone as colored which in some circles is politically incorrect ..were you writing the term as from Sage's point of view? or the time period? Sorry the question is so long!

Ellen Marie Wiseman Hi, Thanks so much for reading THE LOST GIRLS OF WILLOWBROOK, I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it! To answer your question, the use of words such as “idiot”, “moron”, “retarded”, “feeble-minded”, “crippled”, and “colored” in the book were used as historically accurate terms to represent the era in which the story takes place. Thanks, again!
