Goodreads asked Matthew A. Werner:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Matthew A. Werner As a kid growing up on an Indiana farm, I found a picture of my Uncle Dean's basketball team in the attic. I never got a chance to meet Uncle Dean because he died in a tragic farm accident at the age of 26. My dad was only 14 at the time. For years that picture--an 8x10 glossy taken after a real-life David vs. Goliath moment--has hung on my wall and to me that picture meant that anything was possible.

For years I wondered just how that team won and what it was like to be there. Meanwhile, time passed by and one person after another passed away. Three years ago, I finally made a couple phone calls and set up some interviews with Uncle Dean's few surviving teammates. One interview led to another and soon I was talking to people from other teams.

I quickly realized that my uncle's team was simply one part of a much bigger story. An incredible untold story of Indiana high school basketball. Nobody has written about the teams that didn't win it all or that didn't have a Hall of Fame player, but I realized somebody had to tell this story and that somebody had to be me. Three years later, it's finally done.
