Rose Rosetree asked Darryl Chislett:

What have you learned about the smell of the sea, Darryl? (Or would that be, the smells of the sea?) Questions contributed by a big fan of the sea. And also a bit of a smell freak! Thanks in advance.

Darryl Chislett Yes, it is the 'smells' of the sea, all a part of a total awareness. The deeper the sea and the farther away from land and there is just a tang of salt, fresh and clear. A cool light wind is best, you know the air around you is pure. It can be a mystical experience, yes you are with other humans on the vessel, but you can be alone when all you can experience is sea in every direction, the weather and clouds changing as time progresses. The smell of the sea off Africa is different than the smell in the Arctic off the coast of Norway or Greenland. There is life everywhere and what we smell is the life - the smells of life on the land or in the sea - good or bad, it's up to us to classify and judge. But when it's just the salty tang, that's the best, you know it's good and the mind and thoughts can move to higher places.

I have spent much of my life riding around on motorcycles - smell is a major part of that also. Every new part of the road or just around a bend can bring different smells, it's all a part of the experience - and that's what life is for - to experience ( and cherish )!
