I think the secret among many writers, including me, is that we'd probably rather do just about anything else than stare at that blank screen every morning! It takes so much emotional energy to dive into the lives of the characters every day...but that investment of passion and energy is what enriches the books. I love the final product, and after a while, I forget the labor that went into it...but I'm reminded every time I start a new book.
So what keeps me inspired? Honestly, it's the readers. I get wonderful e-mails from readers about the role that books play in their lives, and they're the ones that get me up every morning and put me in front of the keyboard. I can't think of anything more satisfying than the thought of my books lifting people out of their current circumstances and transporting them somewhere entirely new.
Keep those letter coming...you really do keep me writing!

I could not put The Deep, Deep Snow down. Your use of symbolism and foreshadowing is so above the bar of modern literature. (I used to teach English; symbolism was my life, lol.) But my question as a first time reader of your work is about Shelby. I loved her so much! Are there any other books, past or future , that have more Shelby Lake? She is a most interesting, character with such a mysterious past. Thanks!

No question, just thanks for a great story. A bit over a year ago I asked if you were going to start a series with Shelby Lake and you told me that the next in the series was going to be different. What an understatement! The Ursulina was excellent. Suspense and bittersweet tears. Thank you, you did very, very well. ? (I need a question mark in order to send this.)
