Goodreads asked Si Wall:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Si Wall Okay here is my advice from another writer who has been writing for the best part of ten years. 1) Do not set yourself the impossible task of expecting the first writings to shoot you to success - practice and write whenever and where-ever you can 2) Certainly do not expect too much of yourself or publishers or literary agents, otherwise you may turn disappointed and bitter. 3) This industry is tough, it is not for the money orientated or money motivated, so do not go into it on a false pretense pretending that one book will catapult you to stardom. On the whole it doesn't unless you are a celeb. It is difficult to get your work read, let alone become bestsellers in Barnes and Noble overnight. That said, do not underestimate your worth and be as choosy with your works if you do get a publishing deal and be savvy ;) 4) You have to be passionate about writing, no matter who is reading it. 5) Always write after thorough planning & research. Although it is great to put pen to paper to get initial ideas, before you are able to freely write novels and such like, you need to have a plan for the entire novel, otherwise you are liable to go off on a tangent and your story will deviate from its original plan.
