Goodreads asked Clancy Nacht:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Clancy Nacht Write. The more you write, the better you get at it. And write when you're not in the mood. Write when you are in the mood. Write when your significant other is in the mood.

I wrote in fandom and got a lot of rookie mistakes hammered out there. It can be hard to get feedback out in the cold cruel world, fandoms often provide it for free. It's not professional, but it gives you an idea of what people like or don't. Plus you meet some goofballs just as intensely interested in something as you are. Good times.
