The best thing was the most unexpected: the relationship and communication with readers. It is still amazing to me that someone - other than my mom - not only reads my work, but then takes the time to send me a message or email to tell me what they thought, what the book meant to them, what was happening in their lives when they were reading it, how they laughed or cried or thought differently about something. Do you really see small towns as you portray Beautiful? From growing up in one, I saw that anyone who was different was shunned, gossip - YES, and 3 generation feuds over a stolen (by listening in on the 22 party-line telephone) cake recipe just before the annual Strawberry Social.
