Stay true to your vision for your story, but be humble enough to accept advice, and thoughtful enough to decide when to hold firm and when to make changes. Also: you will make mistakes. It's not the end of the world, even though it will feel like it when publishing for the first time. Oh, and hire a professional editor. It is absolutely worth it.
