Does anyone know what Josephine Tey is referring to when she talks about the 'boom'? It is so central to the story yet remains a mystery to me. Google has not been helpful at all. All I can guess is that it is some kind of gymnastics apparatus.

Janice Hamrick This was driving me crazy, too. I found this web page with a "gym fixed hinged boom": https://www.theclassroom.co/fixed-gym... . The picture seems to fit as far as I can tell. Hope this is helpful!
