Rachel Skerle <spoiler> I took the ending to mean that she is the spirit of Maggie's mother. Maggie's mother was killed in the sea that day, which happened to be the same say she met Estrelle. </spoiler>
Kathy Thank you for asking this question. I finished the book just moments ago and have the same question. Google brought me here.
Nicole Spitalnick I had the same question… just finished the book and I was very confused -
Brandon Nicklaus I didn’t understand this either. The book made me feel that somehow she was Maggie’s mother. But then the marriage to her dad would t make sense. I don’t really get the spirit concept either.

Laura Huth Just finished, my initial thought was that Maggie’s mother saved her in the water and in the process drowned hence the “more time” but I have no idea and that’s why I googled it and wound up here!
Allison Armstrong I thought she was Maggie's grandmother. I am not sure why, but I thought Estrelle was too old to be her mother.
