Goodreads asked Joe Augustyn:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Joe Augustyn For me the best thing is the freedom from routine and the ability to schedule my life as I please. It's nice to have fans (and I have some who I cherish) but my ego was subdued (crushed) long ago during my years in Hollywood, where the vast majority of writers are treated like dirt in an effort to keep them in their place so they won't demand movie star fees. I was blessed to work with a few sterling producers and execs but many were soulless gluttonous vampires.

Because I live alone, the solitude sometimes gets rough. I envy writers who have life partners to support them, but I'm also aware of how tough it is to find a proper mate who will facilitate, not interfere with, the creative process. And at my age, I'm more concerned with my legacy of work than my lifestyle.
