Goodreads asked David J. Neumaier:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

David J. Neumaier Read more than you write. This is something I picked up while doing my master's: if you read a ton, you'll learn a ton, and then you'll be able to write a ton. The best part is that as you write your own stories, you'll naturally draw from what you've learned.
If you have trouble learning as you read, keep a notebook and mark passages that stand out to you so you can come back to them and learn the patterns of your favorite authors.
