Goodreads asked T.R. Schenk:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

T.R. Schenk I tell my kids about this one. When I graduated from Berkeley, I couldn't believe how naive I was. With my Business degree from one of the top universities, I just started looking in a Bay Area newspaper and could find nothing that could support a living. My brother-in-law asked me, "Did you check the Cal placement center?" I didn't even know there was such a thing!
When I sat down with a counselor, he had a deck of 3x5 business cards - jobs with very high paying salaries. I picked one that would have sent me to Atlanta with a nationwide real estate developer. I interviewed and got the job. However, a few days later, something fell through and the posting was cancelled, so I went back and was given another job to interview for. I went through that process and got the job. It was in the Bay Area.
Through that job - and over the phone - I met a woman who subsequently became my wife and we had 2 children.
Had I taken the first job, I would have had an utterly different life story, wife, and kids.
The whole point is that there are a few crossroads in life that you take that lays out your whole life story/journey. But ironically, at the time, you have no idea that you are doing this, but clearly see it when you look back.
Has this happened to you?
