Goodreads asked Betsy Hester:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Betsy Hester The idea for this book came from the real life event that had haunted me for more than three decades when I first read about the day care scandal in 1989. What haunted me the most was reading about a 19-year-old defendant who could not afford the bond the state set for her to secure release, and she had a new baby at home. All she had to do was confess or turn state's evidence against the other defendants, especially Bob Kelly. She refused over and over and over, saying "Nothing happened." What young mother would do that? Who wouldn't tell them what they wanted to hear so she could go home to her baby? The questions was, "Did anything really happen?" And that began my 35 year journey into writing this book.
