I don't think it's so much the actor that's the problem as the character he's been written to portray. The new doctor is SUPPOSED to be somewhat unlikable. That's the point of his character arc and the tension in his relationship with Clara.
But obviously that makes it harder for us (the audience) to enjoy watching him.
