Marisa Conte
Marisa Conte asked Bonnie Garmus:

Hi there! I’m so excited to read your book. I just have one question and one comment. Why is this considered historical fiction? I understand that it’s set in the 1960s during the beginning of the teasing of feminism but don’t historical events have to be a part of the novel? Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself and it’s full of historical references, and if so, my apologies!

Bonnie Garmus Marisa, yours is an excellent question! I had no idea I was writing an historical novel--it was only after I wrote it that I was told that's what it was. Although there are no hard, fast rules, there a general thought that a novel set as little as 35 years ago qualifies as historical fiction. So a novel set in 1989 is...history.
