During a conversation with Olympic marathoner Brian Sell, I suggested (and assumed) that his Olympic-qualifying performance was the best race he ever ran. When he said his best race was actually a small-college cross-country event in which he didn't even win, it made me curious how others would view their "best races." Once I picked the brains of other runners -- of all abilities -- I came away with many poignant, inspirational, funny, heart-felt, and unexpected stories which they were happy to recount in our interviews.
