Goodreads asked Bladen Mercutio:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Bladen Mercutio This is definitely the spookiest thing that ever happened to me. I was driving down Highway 60 in New Mexico one night, trying to get to the tiny town of Estancia. Up the road, along the shoulder, was a guy walking. He looked average enough, with a gray hoodie and was holding what I thought was a phone in his left hand. It wasn't until I got closer that I realized a long, thin piece of wood was covering his face completely. As I approached, he turned to look at me, with no eyes--just a faceless, plain plank of wood.

Nearly swerving off the road, I yelled at the top of my lungs, question what it was I had seen. I didn't turn back, I didn't look back. I put both hands on the steering wheel and aimed the car into the night, a completely sick feeling in my gut. We have names for creatures like that here in New Mexico but most of us know better to speak their names. After that night on Highway 60, I know I definitely won't utter them into existence.
