Alexandria asked Lois McMaster Bujold:

Will Penric ever go back to his homeland of the mountain cantons to visit, or take Nikys and the girls with him? I wonder what he would feel coming back to the beginning, as changed as he is now!

Lois McMaster Bujold
Good question, to which I have no specific answer. At this point, not only would many people Pen knew have died, other new ones would have been born -- he does have a number of nieces and nephews he's never met. So not only has he changed, which he well knows, but the place would have too, which might take him more by surprise. Exactly how much would depend on when and why this scenario took place.

We know Pen corresponds with distant professional colleagues and friends. At least at first, I expect Pen did keep up some sort of contact with his family, whatever the 5GU equivalent of the family Christmas letter perhaps. Less often as he moved farther away in space and time. He mostly doesn't try to explain his own job to them. If he did go back, he'd likely feel very displaced, and they wouldn't understand him much. Re: his own family, there'd be a language barrier between them and the Canton in-laws and cousins, though Otta might retain a smattering of Wealdean.
