Paula asked:

Dear K.J Holdom You talked to the family of the young boy that is the basis of this novel but fail to address whether there was in fact a Hans-Peter in real life. Did the real life Max do this excursion on his own or was there a Hans by his side and if so what became of him?

K.J. Holdom Hi Paula, I am so sorry for the delay in replying. I didn’t know this question was here until this minute! Great question. Yes, there was another boy. Edmund Baton wrote to his parents from the camp in France and told them about deserting the evacuation camp with a friend (‘camarade’) from Neunkirchen. He asks his parents to contact that boy’s parents to let them know he’s at the camp. I even had the boy’s name and address but sadly could find no trace for what happened to him. Thank you so much for your lovely review. Have a wonderful day and again, apologies for the delay!
