Goodreads asked James Nuttall:

How do you get inspired to write?

James Nuttall Very small things will set me off. Sentences, pictures, songs sometimes even words on their own. I'll get a picture in my head and that will bulge and swell until there is the beginning of a story. After that I sit in the dark or in the pub and let my mind wander with the story and see where it goes. Sometimes that only goes so far and I have to work on the rest from the skeleton, but if I cling to the original image, I can often get to the end.
