Elizabeth Hoyt:
How do you choose the couples and your names of persons of your books?
Elizabeth Hoyt
I usually choose the couples by thinking "Who is the opposite of this person or would challenge him or her the most?"
Names are in some ways more complicated. I try to pick historically appropriate names for the class that character is from. And, of course, I'd like the name to mean something, too. So Maximus is a Latin name because the upper class went through a Classical naming phase in the Georgian time period. The name means "big" and he's the most powerful aristocrat in England. Winter is a Puritan name (the Makepeace family is never identified as Puritan in the books, but they are middle-class Nonconformists.) Winter himself is a tightly bound character who has 'frozen' his personal life so he can help the less fortunate in St. Giles.
Sometimes, though, I just use a name I like. Hence, Asa Makepeace. ;-)

I am re-reading the whole Maiden Lane Series in prep for Duke of Sin and I appreciate the skill, subtlety and heart in the series even more on my third read of the stories. Just finished Duke of Midnight and was struck by the detailed descriptions of the homes and escape routes of Max and St. John. Do or did these buildings and their secret entrances and rooms exist in London or did you create them from imagination?

Hi, my name is Cintia and I'm from Argentina. Being a writer is what I want the most in this world, nothing makes me happier than writing, but I'm more and more frustrated with each passing day, because I've been blocked for 3 years. And it is not that I have an unfinished story. I have NOTHING AT ALL. A blank page in front of me, that only makes me sadder... Is there a way to overcome this? How do you handle it?

Just finished re reading Wicked Intentions and paid more attention to the information about Mary Whitsun, knowing that her book is coming soon. When you planned the books originally did you sort out the links between books? and are there two sets, ghost books and then garden books?
