Have the works of Pearl S. Buck made any impression on you, positive or negative? I've wondered if your books may contain allusions to hers, or if there are common themes in these novels simply because of your similar cultural experiences. If you feel comfortable sharing any opinions I would be quite interested. Thanks!
Lisa See
Not really. The only book of hers that I've read is Tge Good Earth. That said there was one time when that book did inspire me. When I was working on Dreams of Joy, I wanted to find a place in the countryside for half the story. I was looking at the map of China and all the different provinces, and decided that the right place would be Anwei province, because that is where she set the good Earth. It is a province that has suffered from poverty, famine, drought, and floods. It seemed perfect for Dreams of Joy

I'm almost out of your novels to read, and I'm holding off on reading "Peony in Love", the only one I haven't read yet, because I simply don't know what to do once I've finished it. Do you have any recommendations for me that I can look forwards to after this last novel? Good historical fiction books on China, or on anything else? Oh, and are you working on or planning any projects in the future?

Ms. See, I'd like to thank you for bringing such joy into my life through your stunning work. All have transported me to beautiful places. As a Latina-American, I especially appreciate your focus on women of color, as our stories so often go untold. As for my question: will TTGoHL have a sequel?

Hi! I wanted to ask about the name structure of the Kang sisters from the Island of Sea Women. Why did you decide the character names of Gu-ja and Gu-sun if the second syllable should be a common name shared since they are both girls? Traditionally, the first syllable of the name is a unique personal identifier while the other is a generation name that is shared by all siblings of the same gender within a family.
