Goodreads asked Jae Dawn:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jae Dawn My entire life I have struggled to fall asleep. I can't turn my brain off, and I will lie in bed for an hour or so thinking about the day, tomorrow, and all the things I need to do, stress about, and so on. It's been known to keep me awake all night. So I taught myself to distract my mind by writing stories in my head. I would create characters and a completely original story or sometimes fanfiction, all in my head at night. I would fall asleep doing that. It was the only thing that worked. I've been doing this since early childhood.

In early April 2014 I was doing just that, but instead of falling asleep, I stayed awake all night writing a story in my head. The next day I started jotting it down and my excitement grew as I realized I had created what could be an amazing story.

The Magicis Chronicles was born out of my attempt to lull myself to sleep.
