For me, the hard part is creating the characters. Before they exist, I'm staring at an empty page. But slowly, as they come into focus, they grow into my imaginary friends, complex and fun and lovable. They are the inspiration, and I could write about them far longer than I ever have time to do so. They create their own problems, and they surprise me all the time. I'm loving writing in a series right now. My side characters get their turn in the spotlight. I'm thrilled for the steps they take, as if I'm their mom, cheering from the wings.
