Hey Karen I was wondering what do you do when starting a book? Do you make an outline of everything or do you just start writing?

Hi, Heidi.
Every author is a little different when it comes to getting started. I typically take about a week or so to brainstorm my major story elements. I need to know who the main characters are, what are the main sources of conflict, and about 3 major plot points. I don't write an outline, but I typically write a synopsis that serves as a general roadmap. Then I just sit down and start writing.

Hello Karen, I want to thank you profoundly for the stories you have given the world. I have enjoyed every story I've gotten my hands on, and I'm collecting them all. Each story has taught me so much about myself and life. How long does it take you to research the historical aspect for your stories? Things like locations, historical settings, technological aspects, and names that would fit your time period.

I have so enjoyed reading your books. Over the years, I have read them numerous times and never get tired of them. But, I got to thinking.... Do you ever go back and re-read your own books? Do you enjoy re-reading them or do you mentally edit them? Do you think of other storylines that you would have included if you would write the same story today? Or once you are done writing a book - you're done. ;-)
