Erik Larson:
Have you ever grown 'attached', so to speak, to any of the historical individuals you've researched for your writing? Were there any, for whom, you would have wished a different fate?
Erik Larson
I can't say that I ever feel "attached," but there are characters I've liked very much--for example Olmsted, in Devil in the White City. I don't think that man ever uttered or wrote an unoriginal thought. As to the fates of characters: I go with what history gives me. It's why I don't think I'd ever make a good novelist. A compelling novel involves visiting awful things upon good people. I'd find that hard. But, if history does it to them...well then, bring it on.

A good friend turned my on to you as a writer, in that she knows that I love to read. What did you do prior to becoming such a fabulous author? As a Psychologist nothing is more relaxing then being swept away in a book that literally takes you in and you become a fly on the wall. Thank you - once again for a brilliant novel. I am new to your writing, but must say I am moving rather quickly through your latest, Dead Wake. Enjoying it so much, I have now bought your previous two books. The detail you provide, and the fluidity with which you then lay down the information is very comfortable, as a reader. Where do you find your subject or topic to write about? Do you seek a time period first or a specific incident in history?...RJ Heller

I am a newer fan, impressed with your ability to show the beauty of history. You are able to weave stories that often involve several characters, long timeframes and in-depth facts. Your ability to do so aside from being extremely fascinating I am certain involves extensive research. Do you do most of your own research or do you have an assistant and how do you settle on a specific place and time in history?
