Linda Hartmann asked Gena Showalter:

I love your books but I was wondering where you get your story lines and at what age where you when you knew you wanted to be a writer?

Gena Showalter I’ve been inspired in different ways for different books. Dreams, conversations, something I've seen, even had a book idea hit me after listening to a church sermon. Alice in Zombieland came about from a passage of scripture: (paraphrasing) our battle is not against flesh and blood but against evil spirits. Lords of the Underworld came about because I thought it would be cool for an immortal warrior to be killed only to awaken the next morning know he had to die again.

With the Original Heartbreakers series, I wanted to write about sexy bad boys with traumatic pasts who have the same brotherly bond found in my Lords of the Underworld series -- and yet, I wanted these men to be ones I could truly meet. I wanted to write sassy Southern belles (kinda like the girls in my life) and a quirky small town I wished I lived. I wanted dark and gritty but also sexy and witty. I wanted my cake and I wanted to eat it too LOL

A grain of an idea gets me excited, and then I play connect the dots (asking myself why and how) and the story grows from there!
