Goodreads asked Derek Bailey:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Derek Bailey I like to just walk away for a while. Going for a walk or jog or even doing a full weight workout can be really helpful. These things allow me to engage in health activity and give me some time to think about what I'm stuck on so it's kind of a 2 for 1 deal.

TV and video games are not so helpful since my mind tends to focus on the entertainment that I am receiving and when I go back to writing I am no less stuck than I was before.

A huge preventative to block that I use is to create a very detailed outline. This allows me to set up all the key points of a chapter, story, or section. I also use this time to make decisions on how things are named. If the world or characters are especially deep or confusing, then I also make a basic spreadsheet to keep track of it all.
