Goodreads asked Robert Spiller:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Robert Spiller In the community of Ellicott, Colorado, which I loosely base the Bonnie Pinkwater novels on, there were two events that inspired Napier's Bones. One was a monumental blizzard that stranded most of the students and faculty at the school for a few days. The second was when a young man murdered his prom date. Even though these events did coincide in real life I decided they would make for compelling reading if they did in my book - along with a a few twists.
