Goodreads asked Rival Gates:

How do you get inspired to write?

Rival Gates I often come up with my ideas in a backward way. Let's say I see or envision a move in a fight scene that I find really exciting. Then I figure how that move would be integrated into a fight. Next I figure how many people will be in the fight and who they are. Then I need a reason for the fight to happen. Lastly I come up with the events leading to and coming after the fight. That whole event is then placed somewhere on the timeline I make of the story where it best fits.
