Goodreads asked Jonathan Fesmire:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Jonathan Fesmire The main reason I would get writer's block in the past was sitting down with a blank page not knowing what I was going to write about. You can't start a story with no ideas. Well, you can, but you'll get blocked a lot and the story probably won't be any good.

Before you write anything (except for free-writing), know what you're going to write about. For a story, that means having characters and a situation ready to go. For an article, that means you've done some research, taken notes, and know what you want to say.

When writing a longer work, like a novel or non-fiction book, after every section, think about what you've already written about, and figure out what you're going to cover next. Plan scenes before you write the first draft. You'll be surprised how much time this can save you, and how much better your scenes and chapters will be.
