Goodreads asked Scott Skipper:

How do you get inspired to write?

Scott Skipper It's all about source material. Once you find something interesting you must then become an expert on the topic. Only after I feel sufficiently padded with facts am I inspired to write.

My first and second, Family Traits and In the Blood, were the result of fifteen years of genealogical research. I wasn't just inspired, I had to write those stories. While doing research for In the Blood I discovered a fact about the relatively obscure Mexican-American War that gave me an intriguing idea, and that was the genesis of The Hundred Years Farce. Then I was stumped until I found a folder in the garage filled with yellow crumbling newspaper clippings from 1985 about the discovery of the grave of Nazi fugitive, Josef Mengele. I waited thirty-five years to write Face of the Angel.
